Music in the Church of Christ is purely acapella (vocal singing with no mechanical accompaniments or instruments).
In the New Testament, there are only nine scriptures, no other, which specify the type of music or singing in worship of God. This what was commanded by Jesus Christ and His apostles, and practised by the early church:
i. Mathew 26:30, “And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”
ii. Acts 16:25, “But at midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God.”
iii. Romans 15:9, “For this reason I will confess you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.”
iv. I Corinthians 14:15, “I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.”
v. Ephesians 5:19, “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”
vi. Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.”
vii. Hebrews 2:2, “In the midst of the assembly, I will sing praise to you.”
viii. Hebrews 13:15, “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His Name.”
ix. James 5:13, “Is any among you suffering? Let him pray, Is any cheerful? Let him sing Psalms.”
The above scriptures, without exception, specify singing only. Singing graciously, with understanding, generates melody in the heart and uplifts the spirit. This is what worshipping in spirit implies. Vocal music, which is the fruit of our lips (Heb 13:15), is the New Testament’s prescription for the Christians. Mechanical instrument of music in worship is not mentioned anywhere in the New Testament Scriptures because they are not authorised. The command is “sing.”
